Precedent 1 | Pingehe Bibliotheathre
Pinghe Bibliotheater is the core of OPEN’s latest project—School as Village/Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School. A library, a theater, and a black box interlock together like a Chinese puzzle to form this characteristic building that some call ‘the blue whale', while others see it as an ocean liner. The unique form of the building and the free-flowing spaces not only cultivate the students’ interests in reading and performing, but also encourage their imagination to roam freely in the ocean of knowledge.
In this precedent study, I would like to make a focus study on the natural lighting which is coming from the top, which give an impactful experience to the user. The fenestration on top of the building could act as a sculptural feature to an area.

It comprises a library and two theaters that interlock within a structure that has been dubbed 'the blue whale' at 5372 s.q.m, which forms part an international school in shanghai, has been designed to foster students' interests in reading and performing. Its form of blue whale is cater to suit its location of the corner boundary. An additional entrance nearby bibliotheathre allocated for bus entry. A recessed road lay-by for loading bay located at the rear and access to basement parking.
The visitor from the entrance gate and are lead to the bibliotheathre lobby. The lobby acts as starting point which lead visitor access to the other part of the building which include auditorium, black box theatre, convenience store and the cafe. The storage, pantry, dressing room, duty room are categorized as ancillary area and are allocated adjacent to auditorium, black box theatre and convenience store.
A giant oculus dropping down from the ceiling illuminates the very center in an almost spiritual way, forming an emotionally charged central space. The library is located atop of the auditorium area, the book shelves which carry abundant of load are in radial arrangement is to distribute the load evenly across the area to the beam structure. Yet,in order to secure the structure, there is a double beam arranged up and down to withstand the heavy load from library.

Its location respond to the loading bay for loading or unloading convenient. The coat check is adjacent to the auditorium yet it also respond to the building exit which convenience the people retrieve their belongings kept and exit after the show.
From the bibliotheathre, i found that the architect designed the requirement of opening and artificial lighting depending functional requirements. For example, the theater and auditorium, natural light is avoided entirely, and artificial lighting was carefully designed to meet functional requirements.

Precedent 2 | MIA Design Studio Office
From this precedent study, I would like to emphasise the planning of programs in a limited footprint, the usage of glass interior and exterior and openings. Follows function, the approach of architectural design in MIA Is purely defined from operational aspects of an open studio, each area is calculated carefully to reduce waste and non-performable spaces. It has an approximate small footprint, thus the considerable amount of glass usage as partition and even furniture is to reduce the narrowness of spaces in the office.
The plan is about a square layout approximate 18m by 18m. The design witht the skylight and stair located at the right middle of the layout, it illuminates the interior and reduce the darkness when it goes deep in the middle of the square layout. The centre skylight is assumed to illuminate the interior 4m radius from the centre. Thus, reduce the artificial lighting needed during the day.
The centred staircase is the only circulation linkage in the office. Light penetration into interior is available due to its design combinate with open library. Staircase, where an area allow people permeable through the office ,but not to stay long. The hot direct sunlight during the noon into the area are acceptable due to its function.
With its transparency properties, this materials had been used as a diving wall. It does not give a feeling of disconnection of space. Additionally, it create an interesting reflection when viewing from the office.

Performance and efficiency of creativities inside the office are considered the most prioritized idea of the design, in which we imagined a functional space with large tables for architects and a vertical open-library.
Combined with the opening is the cantilever window bay, it creates the sunshade function to reduce direct sunlight but also creates double working space for each architect. The green pockets atop the window bay’s sunhood, the ivy plants as a “planta blind” to control the light penetration, yet without the greenery, the performance of window bay are excellent to limit the direct sunlight.
