Pinghe Bibliotheater is the core of OPEN’s latest project—School as Village/Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School. A library, a theater, and a black box interlock together like a Chinese puzzle to form this characteristic building that some call ‘the blue whale', while others see it as an ocean liner. The unique form of the building and the free-flowing spaces not only cultivate the students’ interests in reading and performing, but also encourage their imagination to roam freely in the ocean of knowledge.

In this precedent study, I would like to make a focus study on the natural lighting which is coming from the top, which give an impactful experience to the user. The fenestration on top of the building could act as a sculptural feature to an area.

Precedent 2 | MIA Design Studio Office

From this precedent study, I would like to emphasise the planning of programs in a limited footprint, the usage of glass interior and exterior and openings. Follows function, the approach of architectural design in MIA Is purely defined from operational aspects of an open studio, each area is calculated carefully to reduce waste and non-performable spaces. It has an approximate small footprint, thus the considerable amount of glass usage as partition and even furniture is to reduce the narrowness of spaces in the office.
